The Respiratory System Flashcards
Function of lungs
Sacs that allow movement of air around the body.
Left one is smaller as it needs space for the heart.
Function of Diaphragm
Used in process of respiration/inhalation.
A FOME shaped muscle that separates the chest from the rest of the body cavity.
Inhale = contracts
Exhale = relaxes
What is the order in which air enters.
Bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
What is gas exchange?
Gases move from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
Alveoli - high pressure/ concentration of o2
Capillaries surrounding alveoli from muscles - low pressure/concentration of o2
Movement of o2 from high pressure to low through thin walls of capillaries and alveoli.
Capillaries gain o2 from alveoli and transport it around the body.
why is the respiratory system important to an athlete?
When exercising the lungs bring oxygen into the lungs that pump air around the body to provide energy and removing the wast products like carbon dioxide.
