Movement at joints 2 Flashcards
Where does abduction, adduction and rotation occur in the body?
ball and socket joints
What is abduction?
The act of taking away your hands or legs away from the midline of your body.
Give an example when a person may do abduction.
When intercepting a ball in netball, the arm is taken away from the body to reach and catch the ball. The action is abduction in the shoulder.
Define adduction.
When a part of your body comes back towards the midline of the body.
Give an example of adduction.
When doing a breaststroke in swimming, when the arms return to the side of your body. This happens at the shoulders.
What is rotation?
When the bone at a joint moves around in a circular motion - the biggest range of movement.
Examples of rotation.
When doing a front breaststroke, the shoulder rotates in a circular motion as the arm goes over the head and back into the water.
Identify the range of movement at the shoulder when doing a star jump.
When spreading your arms and legs out it is abduction and when you bring it back next to the body it is adduction.
