Ligaments, Tendons and muscle types Flashcards
What is a ligament?
Tough connective tissue that joins BONE TO BONE which holds the bone together to form the joint.
Why are ligaments important?
They prevent unwanted movements like dislocation.
Help keep joints stable.
What are tendons?
They are tough connective tissues that join MUSCLE TO BONE.
Why are tendons important?
Hold the muscle to the bone so that when the muscle contracts the muscle can be able to pull on the bone and cause movement.
What are the three muscle types?
Cardiac
Voluntary
Involuntary
Where is cardiac muscle found?
Cardiac muscle forms the heart.
Unconsciously controlled and automatically contracts.
What does the cardiac muscle do?
It pumps blood around the body when it contracts.
What is voluntary muscles.
They are skeletal muscles that attach TENDON to SKELETON.
They are under conscious so we decide when we want them to work.
What is an example of voluntary muscles?
When we want to move our bicep, the bicep contracts when we perform bicep curls.
What is involuntary muscles?
Are found in blood vessels (stomach and intestines)
They contract automatically, slowly and rhythmically.
Blood vessels help regulate blood flow.
