The reproductive system Flashcards
Pertaining to or relating to reproduction
Reproductive
What makes up the female reproductive system
-Ovaries
-Fallopian tubes
-Uterus
-Vagina
-External genitalia
-Mammary glands
Essential organ responsible for releasing and storying the ovum (egg) and producing hormones necessary for fertility, menstruation, and pregnancy.
-Female gonads
-Hormones secreted are estrogen and progesterone
Ovaries
Located below the fallopian tubes and next to the uterus.
-Ovarian follicles: small sacs in the ovaries that hold immature eggs
-During menstrual cycle, follicles mature and an egg is released
-Egg then travels through the fallopian tube to the uterus
Ovaries
Muscular tube extending from the uterus to the ovaries.
-Site of ovum fertilization
-Transport fertilized egg to the uterus after fertilization
Fallopian tubes (uterine tubes)
Muscular, hollow organ where a fertilized egg implants during pregnancy
-Located behind the urinary bladder in the pelvic cavity
- If fertilized egg implants properly, fetus will grow in the uterus
-If not, endometrial lining is shed
Uterus
-Fundus
-Body
-Cervix
Uterine divisions
-Prominence on the superior aspect of the uterus
-Main portion connected to the fallopian tubes
-Inferior, narrow portion between the uterus and the vagina
What are the layers of the uterus?
-Deepest layer; mucous membrane
-Middle muscle layer
-Superficial serous layer
-Endometrium
-Myometrium
-Perimetrium
Muscular tube leading from the uterus out of the body
-Posterior to the urinary bladder and urethra in the pelvic cavity
-Passageway for childbirth and for sperm to reach eggs
Vagina
External genitalia:
1. Adipose tissue anterior to the pubic symphysis
2. Skin fold extending from #1
3. Skin folds between #2
4.
- Mons pubis
- Labia majora
- Labia minora
- Urinary meatus
Function in producing mild postpartum.
-Similar to apocrine glands
-Dynamic structure
-Controlled by the pituitary gland
Mammary glands
What makes up the male reproductive system?
-Testes
-Scrotum
-Spermatic ducts
-Urethra
-Prostate gland
-Penis
Essential organ responsible for secretion of testosterone and production of sperm (spermatogenesis).
-Located in the scrotum (pouch like accessory organ suspended outside the body cavity)
-Each testis is considered to be a gland
Testes
Tightly coiled tube superior and posterior to the testes in the scrotum responsible for storing sperm cells.
reproductive ducts
Epididymis
Muscular tibe responsible for transporting sperm from the epididymis to the urethra
Vas defrens (spermatic ducts, ductus deferens)
