Integumentary System Flashcards
Made up of the skin and connective tissues; skin is a cutaneous membrane forming a sheet like covering; layer of fat beneath skin supplies nutrients, cushions, and connects skin to muscles and deeper layers
Integumentary system
The study of skin
Dermatology
Relating to the outer surface of a structure. Ex. Skin and it’s components
Integumentary
Outermost layer of the skin.
-5 tightly packed layers
-stratum corneum: outermost layer
-dermis+epidermis meet at dermal-epidermal junction
-melanocytes produce melanin in deepest layer
Epidermis
Deeper layer of skin.
-made of mostly connective tissue
-contains lots of blood vessels
-collagen and other fibers keep skin elastic and strong
-contains two main layers (papillary and reticular)
Dermis
Deepest layer of skin.
-stores energy and connects dermis to muscle and bone
-mostly adipose (fatty) tissue
-contained nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels
Hypodermis
-stems from pocket like structures called follicles
-not found on lips, palms, or soles of feet
-follicles extend into the dermis
-arrector pili: tiny involuntary muscles (makes ___ on back of neck stand up)
Hair (accessory structure)
-grow from the epidermis
-body is the visible (but non living) portion
-root is hidden by cuticle
- lunula is crescent-shaped portion near the root end
Nail (accessory structure)
A secretory organ or structure that can manufacture a secretion
Gland
Sweat glands (detox and temp reg)
- located in dermis, originate in epidermis
-Eccrine glands are distributed around entire body (secrete sweat)
-Apocrine glands are found in axilla (arm pit) and around genitals (secrete a thicker solution)
Sudoriferous glands
Sebum glands (moisturize hair and skin)
-secrete sebum
-sebum: an oil that lubricates hair and skin
-present anywhere hair grows
-attach to hair follicles
Sebaceous glands
