Lymphatic system Flashcards
Watery fluid formed in the tissue spaces.
-Transport lymphocytes and other substances (proteins, minerals, fats)
-Starts as blood plasma that is forced out of the capillaries and into the interstitial space
-Lymph then moves into the lymphatic capillaries
Lymph
-Supports the cardiovascular and immune system
-Maintains homeostasis by returning fluid back to the blood
-Absorption of fat from digestion
-Transportation and removal of waste product
Functions of the lymphatic system
-Similar to veins
-Capillaries –> venues –> veins
-Lymphatic capillaries wind through blood capillaries and pick up leaked fluid (flaps in lymphatic cap. open to take in fluid when pressure in the interstitial space is too high)
-Made of loosely overlapping endothelial cells that contain flaps that allow fluid to enter the capillaries
-Contain valves
-Operate under low pressure
Lymphatic vessels
- R torso, arm, head, and thorax drain into the ____
- Rest of the body drains into the thoracic duct and then into the ___
- Subclavian and internal jugular vein empty into the ___
Lymphatic drainage
1. Internal jugular vein
2. Subclavian vein
3. Inferior vena cava
Inspection sites within the lymphatic system.
-Lymphocytes inspect lymph within the ___
-If invaders are detected, lymphocytes can trigger the release of macrophages or activate a general immune response
Lymph nodes
Lymphatic tissues located around sensitive organs of the body.
Mucoid associated lymphoid tissues (MALTS)
Immune tissue within the throat
Tonsils
Immune tissues within the small intestine
Peyer’s patches
Holding container for nonpathogenic bacteria
Appendix
Temporary holding area for lymph moving towards the veins
Cisterna chyli
Lymphatic capillaries in the wall of the small intestine
Lacteals
Filters and stores blood, produces white blood cells
Spleen
Endocrine glad in the chest that helps white blood cells to function and mature properly
Thymus gland
