Endocrine system Flashcards
Pertaining to a ductless gland that secretes directly into the bloodstream
-Hormones
Endocrine
Signaling molecules that coordinate body functions
Hormones
Pertaining to a gland that delivers it’s secretion through a duct
Exocrine
A gland that has both endocrine and exocrine functions
-Ex. Pancreas
Heterocrine
“Master gland” of the body that tells other glands to release their hormones
-Located in the Sella Turcica on the sphenoid bone
-Also called hypophysis
-Regulates growth, metabolism, and reproduction. Controls the thyroid, gonadal glands. And functions in regulating kidney, uterus, and breast function
Pituitary gland
Division of the pituitary gland that regulates growth, metabolism, and reproduction
Anterior pituitary
Division of the pituitary gland that functions in fetal development and kidney function
Posterior pituitary
Functions in controlling metabolism and regulating body functions like like breathing and heart rate
-butterfly shaped gland located in the neck (on either side of the trachea below the larynx)
-Cannot function without iodine
Thyroid gland
Responsible for regulation of calcium levels in the body
-Located on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland
Parathyroid glands
Creates hormones that control heart rate, blood pressure, immune system functions, and other body functions
-Suprarenal: located on the superior surface of the kidney
Adrenal glands (suprarenal glands)
Divided into the adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla.
1. Produces steroid hormones that function in maintaining sodium, potassium, and blood glucose levels and in reproductive organ development
2. Secretes hormones that function in dealing with stress
Divisions of adrenal gland
1. Adrenal cortex
2. Adrenal medulla
Clusters of cells in the pancreas which produce insulin.
-Located on the abdominal wall posterior to the stomach
-Exocrine portion secretes digestive enzymes
Pancreas (Islets of Langerhans)
Functions in immune response
-Located behind the sternum
Thymus
Produces melatonin
-Located in the brain
Pineal glands
Sex glands
-Female sex glands in the ovaries secrete estrogen and progesterone
-Male sex glands in the testes secrete testosterone
Gonads
