Body is erect or in standing posture with the arms at the sides and palms turned forward; head and feet pointed forward; feet are aligned at the toe and slightly set apart
Anatomical position
Toward the top of the head; a structure situated above another structure
Superior
Beneath; lower; the undersurface of an organ; a structure below another structure
Inferior
Before or in front of; refers to the front side of the body structure
Anterior (ventral)
Behind or in back of; refers to the back side of the body structure
Posterior (dorsal)
Pertaining to the middle; toward the median plan of the body
Medial
Pertaining to the side of the body; away from the median plane
Lateral
Nearest to the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk of the body
Proximal
Farther away from the point of attachment or from the trunk
Distal
Within the body; within or on the inside
Internal
Pertaining to the exterior
External
Pertaining to, or forming, the wall of a cavity
Parietal
Pertaining to the internal organs contained within a cavity
Visceral
Located at, or pertaining to, the outer surface of the body or body part; located away from the center
Peripheral
Situated at or pertaining to a center or central point
Central
Body is lying face upward
Supine
Body is lying face down
Prone
Pertaining to or situated near the surface of the body or body part
Superficial
Below the surface, or toward the central part of a structure
Deep
At right angles to another surface
Perpendicular
