The plasma membrane Flashcards
Functions
-Holds components inside the cell
-Allows things to enter and exit the cell
-Transport of molecules/ a protective layer
3 components
-proteins
-phospholipid
-cholesterol
3 proteins
-Integral
-Peripheral
-Glucoproteins
Role of the membrane
-Partially permeable controlling the transport of molecules in and out
-Seperates the contents of the cell from the outside environment
-Allows cells to signal each other
-A site for biochemical reactions
-Allows cells to change shape
Fluid mosaic model
-Has fluidity and can change shape
-All components that make up the membrane are all different shapes therefore making a ‘mosaic’
-Phospholipid molecules can move relative to each other providing a flexible structure
Phospholipid bilayer/phopholipids
-Phospholipids allow lipid-soluble substances to enter/exit the cell, prevent water-soluble substances entering/ leaving and provide flexibility, Hydrophilic head/hydrophobic tail
-Phospholipid bilayer: two layers of phospholipids facing opposite ways
