The Integumentry System Flashcards
3 layers of the skin
1.Epidermis
2.Dermis
3. Subcutaneous layers (hypodermis)
Function and component of the system
Protects body from damage, includes hair, scales, feathers, hooves and nails, glands and skin.
Epidermis
-Waterproof, outer layer which keeps pathogens out of the body
-it is elastic and gives the skin colour
Dermis
-middle layer which contains hair follicles, nerves, blood vessels and glands to help regulate body temperature
Subcutaneous layer
Made of connective tissue and has a high amount of fat which provides insulation and shape
Skin glands
Sudoriferous
Sebaceous
Ceruminous
Sudoriferous
Secretes sweat
Sebaceous
Secretes sebum which keeps hair and skin lubricated
Ceruminous
Specialised sudoriferous glands that secrete earwax
Downy hair
-Dense, fine, soft hairs which lie close to the skin making up the undercoat
-Good for insulation
Guard hair
-Coarser,thicker, longer hairs make up the top coat
-Help prevent injuries to the skin and influences the animal appearance
-Each guard hair is surrounded by 6-12 downy hairs
Nails, claws and hooves
Nails- a nail matrix forms on top of the dermis. The root of the nail grows from a thick layer of matrix
Claws and hooves- made of a selection of the dermis which is covered in a layer of keratinised epithelium
Horns and antlers
Made from different things in different species
Hollow horns- eg goats and sheep are made from a cone of keratin which surrounds a mass of bone. Rhino horns are different because they are made from keratinised cells without a core bone
Antlers- made of bone, young antlers are covered in velvety skin which is rubbed off as the antlers develop, the bone turns into compact bone tissue as they mature
