Cellular Respiration Flashcards
Aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Respiration is the release of oxygen from the breakdown of glucose
The energy used for; growth making new materials, movement and heat production
Aerobic- biological process
Food glucose is converted into energy in the presence of oxygen
Formula = Glucose (C6H1206) + Oxygen 6(O2) = Carbon Dioxide 6(Co2) + Water 6(H20) + Energy (ATP)
-occurs in mitochondria
Anaerobic - respiratory process
-occurs in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes in which cells break down the sugar molecules to produce energy without the presence of oxygen
Formula = Glucose (C6H1202) = Lactic acid 2( C3H6O3)
-occurs in the cytoplasm
Oxygen debt
-anaerobic respiration occurs there is a build up of lactic acid
-lactic acid damages cells and tissues, it can be broken down by oxygen
-the temporary shortage of oxygen is referred to oxygen debt
