What is it?
-known as the buccal cavity
-contains the tongue, teeth and salivary glands
The 3 stages
- Pretension- the picking up of food
- Mastication- breaking up of food via chewing
3.Lubrication- coating the food with saliva making it easier to swallow
The tooth
- The centre is a pulp cavity containing blood capillaries and nerves
- Dentine , a calcified tissue, forms the main part of the tooth
- The surface of each tooth is covered with enamel, made up of minerals which protects the underlying structures
Canines
For holding prey and tearing tissue
Incisors
For holding prey and tearing tissue
Premolars
Shearing flesh and grinding food
Molars
Heavy grinding of food
Dental structure for a herbivore
-adapted to eating plant material
-incisors are sharp used to cut and nibble
-do not possess canine teeth
-premolars and molars have flat surfaces to grind
Carnivores
-adapted to eating meat
-canines are long and pointed, used to hold prey, pierce skin, and rip meat
-insider teeth are sharp to cut meat
-carnassial teeth (molars) are used to shear meat
-flaws move up and down
Birds
-Beaks made up of bone, keratin and blood vessels
-adapted shape to the type of food they eat
-don’t have teeth or chew
