Oogenesis & Spermatogenesis Flashcards
Oogenesis
Production of ova, not continuous part of the menstrual cycle
-FSH is released stimulating one (or more) follicles to mature
-LH stimulates the now-mature follicles to produce more oestrogen and to inhibit the production of FH and FSH
-increase in oestrogen stimulates LH & FSH production which leads to ovulation
Spermatogenesis
Production of sperm, continuous process
-LH stimulation production of testosterone
-sperm produced and mature, FSH and testosterone
-sertoli cells secrete inhibit, stops follicle stimulating hormone and spermatogenesis
Stages of fertilisation
- Copulation
- Fertilisation
- Implantation
- Gestation
- Parturition (birth)
Copulation
Sexual behaviour, male introduces sperm into females body (directly into reproductive tract)
Fertilisation
When the DNA from 2 gamete’s combines
Implantation
When the fertilised egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus
Gestation
The length of time it takes from conception to birth
Process of fertilisation
Gametes combine
Cells divide by mitosis
The blastocyst implants into the uterine wall
Centric implantation
Delay between fertilisation and implantation, allows fertilised egg too grow to join the uterus lining without it embedding
Gestation periods (rabbit,cat,dog,pig,cow)
Rabbit = 30-32 days
Cat = 61-72 days
Dog = 58-70 days
Pig = 114-115 days
Cow = 279-287 days
