The nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of the nervous system?
A
- The nervous is used for the different parts of the body to communicate with eachother
- This is needed to coordinate behaviour and respond to the surroundings
2
Q
What is the purpose of a neuron and how is it adapted for this?
A
- A neuron is used to carry electrical impulses from one point to another
- It is adapted as it is long, thin and has many branched connections on both ends which allows it to pass impulses on to other neurons
3
Q
What is a synapse?
A
- The small gap between the end of one neuron and the start of another
4
Q
How do neurons communicate with eachother?
A
- When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron, it releases chemical that diffuse across the synapse and trigger another electrical impulse in a new neuron
5
Q
What is the CNS?
A
- The CNS is part of the nervous system
- It consists of the brain and the spinal cord
- It takes in sensory information and sends out instructions to the rest of the body
6
Q
What is a sensory neuron?
A
- Carries information from receptors to the CNS
7
Q
What is a motor neuron?
A
- Carries information from the CNS to effectors
8
Q
What is a reflex action?
A
- Automatic response to a stimuli
9
Q
What is a reflex arc?
A
- The nerve pathway that is followed by a reflex action
10
Q
What is the reflex arc pathway that is followed (orders of neurons)?
A
- Stimuli > receptor> sensory neuron > relay neuron > motor neuron > effector > response
11
Q
What is a relay neuron?
A
- The neuron inside the CNS that connects the sensory and motor neuron
