Competition and interdependence Flashcards
1
Q
What is a habitat?
A
- The place where an organism lives
2
Q
What is a population?
A
- All of the organisms of a particular species that live in a specific habitat
3
Q
What is a community?
A
- All the populations of different species that live together in a habitat
4
Q
What are biotic and abiotic factors?
A
- Biotic factors: living factors that affect another species or the environment
- Abiotic factors: non-living factors that affect another species or the environment
5
Q
What is an ecosystem?
A
- The interaction between a community and the non-living parts of the environment
6
Q
What is competition?
A
- If a group of organisms all need the same resource but there is a limited amount of the resource available, they have to compete for it
- Competition can take place between organisms of the same species or of a different species
7
Q
What is interdependence?
A
- All species depend on other species in some way
8
Q
What does a food web show?
A
- The feeding relationships between species within a community
9
Q
What does a food web and interdependence tell us?
A
- If one species is affected, all other species in the community will also be affected
10
Q
What do animals compete for?
A
- Food
- Water
- Territory
11
Q
What do plants compete for?
A
- Light
- Space
- Water
12
Q
Examples of biotic and abiotic factors
A
- Biotic: availability of food, new predators, competition
- Abiotic: light intesntiy, temperature, moisture
