Selective breeding Flashcards
1
Q
What is selective breeding?
A
- Choosing the best plants/aimals from a popluation and breeding them together in hopes of getting better offspring
2
Q
Explain the process of selective breeding
A
- Organisms with most desired traits are chosen carefully and bred together
- Offspring with most desired traits are chosen and bred together
- Repeated over many generations
- All organisms in population posses high value of desired trait
3
Q
What is the gene pool?
A
- All of the genes and alleles found in a popluation
4
Q
What are the disadvantages of selective breeding?
A
- Reduces gene pool: best individuals are closely related which leads to inbreeding. Inbred organisms more pron to disease or inhereted defects
- Reduces genetic variation: population is more susceptible to disease. A disease could kill all organisms in a population
