Osmosis Flashcards
1
Q
Define osmosis
A
- The net movement of water particles
- Across a partially permeable membrane
- From an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration
2
Q
What does water concentration refer to
A
- Ratio of water particles to solutes
3
Q
What type of movement is osmosis
A
- Passive movement of water
- Doesn’t require energy
4
Q
Summarise the osmosis required practical
A
- As the concentration of sugar solution increasesm the mass change of the potato will decrease, from a positive change to a negative change
- This is because when there is no sugar in the solution , there is a higher concentration os water in the solution than the potato and so water will diffuse into the protato via osmosis
- As the concentration of sugar solution decreases, the concentration gradient will also decrease, meaning that after a certain point, water will start to diffuse out of the potato via osmosis causing the mass of the potato to decrease
