DNA 3 - structure and coding Flashcards
1
Q
What is DNA made up of
A
- DNA is a polymer that is made up of repeating units of nucleotides (monomers)
- These nucleotides hold the two strands of the double helix together
2
Q
What is the make up of a nucleotide?
A
- Consists of a phosphate, sugar and base
- All nucleotides have the same sugar and phosphate
- As there are 4 different bases, there are 4 different nucleotides
3
Q
What are the complimentary base pairings?
A
- A + T
- C + G
4
Q
What is a codon and genetic code?
A
- Genetic code: a sequence of bases
- Codon: triplet of bases
5
Q
How does DNA code for a protein?
A
- A section of DNA is read in triplets / codons
- Each triplet codes for a specific amino acid
- Amino acids join and fold up to make a protein
