What is contraception?

- Any artificial method that people use to prevent pregnancy

How can oestrogen and progesteron be used as contraception?
A
- Oestrogen:
- If released steadiy everday then it inhibits FSH
- Egg won’t mature so won’t release
- Progesteron:
- Stimulated build up of thick mucus at the enterance of the uterus so prevents sperm reaching egg

- 99% effective
- Side effects such as headaches and nauseaj

- Patch:
- Lasts 1 week
- Slowly releases hormones into body
- Injection:
- Lasts 2 - 3 months

- Lasts 3+ years
- Releases progesterone that stimulates build up of thick mucus at enterance of uterus
- Copper IUD:
- No hormones but kills sperm
