DNA 2 - key terms Flashcards
1
Q
What is a characteristic determined by?
A
- A characteristic can be determined by a single gene but is usually determined by the interaction of multiple different genes
2
Q
What is an allele?
A
- Different versions of the same gene
- Gene = eye colour
- Allele 1 = blue eyes
- Allele 2 = brown eyes
3
Q
How many alleles of each gene do we have?
A
- 2 (one maternal and one paternal)
4
Q
What is homozygous and hetrozygous?
A
- Homozygous: 2 of the same allele of 1 charateristic
- Hetrozygous: 2 different alleles of 1 charateristic
5
Q
What is a dominant and recessive allele?
A
- A dominant allele will always be expressed, no matter what the other allele is (homozygous or hetrozygous)
- A recessive allele will only be expressed when both alleles are the same (homozygous)W
6
Q
What is a genotype and phenotype?
A
- Genotype: collection of alleles we have
- Phenotype: the characteristic that is expressed by the genotype
