The Lymphatic System Flashcards
Why is the lymphatic system important
Help body fight infection
What is the lymphatic system
Works as part of the circulatory system
returns the fluid that has leaked from the capillaries to circulating blood
Fluid called lymph is clear and similar to plasma but without plasma proteins
contains more lymphocytes than blood
The lymphatic system is made up of
Network of vessels, tissues and organs that get rid of toxins and unwanted materials to fight infection
What does the lymphatic system returns
Interstitial fluid from tissue to circulatory system
What does the lymphatic system pass excess of
Proteins back into the blood stream
What does the lymphatic system filter
Lymph to remove waste and toxic material
What does the lymphatic system produce and transport
Antibodies and lymphocytes
What does the lymphatic system transport and digest
Fats and fats soluble vitamins from intestine to other sites in body for storage
What are the lymph vessels
Act like veins and capillaries to transport lymph
What are the lymph nodes
Filter lymph to get rid of toxins, waste and pathogens
Found along lymph vessels
What are the lymph organs
Spleen and thymus
What is the thymus
T cells mature
Destroy virus infected cells
Instruct body to release other cells to fight infection
What are tonsils
Lymphoid tissue at junction of the pharynx and oral cavity
First line of defence against microorganisms
What is the bone marrow
All blood cells originate(haematopoesis) in the bone marrow
What for helper b cells do
Identify foreign bodies or material and trigger the immune response
