Blood And Components Flashcards
What does blood do
Transport materials and heat around the body
Protect against the disease
What are the components of the blood
Water
Erythrocytes- red blood cells
Leukocytes- white blood cells
Plasma- most of the blood
Platelets
What is the structure of the red blood cells
Small
Round
Biconcave (two round sides with dipped middle, allows to squeeze together and move)- surface area increase, absorb more oxygen
Fold- fit through smaller vessels.
Flexible- fit through narrow blood vessels
What is the function of the red blood cells
Deliver oxygen to cells
Carries carbon dioxide and waste gases to the lungs where it is excreted
Contains haemoglobin- absorbs ion and make more blood cells
What is the structure of white blood cells (leukocytes)
Lobed and large nuclei
Many structures- countless, round, larger
What is the function of the white blood cells
Defend body against infection and disease
B lymphocytes make antibodies
T lymphocytes initiate an immune response
What is the structure of the platelets
Parts of cells with proteins attached
Proteins stick together when needed to clot
What is the function of platelets
Help repair- illness, injury and bleeding
What is the structure of the plasma
Straw coloured
Clear
Pale
Fluid
Largest single component
What is the function of the plasma
Helps with immunity, blood clotting, maintains blood pressure
Material transport- hormones, carbon dioxide and waste
Makes up 55% of blood
What is the function of b lymphocytes
Produce antibodies
What is the function of t lymphocytes
Initiate immune response
What is the structure of monocytes
Make around 2-8% of total white blood cells
What is the function of monocytes
Fight off chronic illnesses
What is the structure of eosinophils
Granulocytes
