Osmoregulation Flashcards
What is homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
What must be controlled in the body to maintain homeostasis
Glucose
Salt
Carbon dioxide
Water
Temperature
What is osmoregulation
Maintains the balance of salt and water concentrations in the body to keep constant osmotic pressure
What happens if an animal is dehydrated
Not enough water to drink
Pituitary gland releases lots of ADH
High volume of water reabsorbed by kidneys
Low volume of concentrated urine to bladder
High volume of water in the blood
Normal water levels in the blood
Water content of blood is low
What happens if an animal is hydrated
Too much to drink
Pituitary gland releases little ADH
Low volume of water reabsorbed by kidneys
High volume of concentrated water to bladder
Low volume of water in the blood
Normal water levels resume in the blood
Water content of blood is high
What happens if the concentration of solutes surrounding cells become hypertonic
Cells will shrivel
What happens if the concentration of solutes surrounding cells become hypotonic
Cells will take in too much water and burst
What does the hypothalamus detect
Change in water content via osmoreceptors
controls regulation of water levels in body
