Q

What is the passage of air for birds

A

Inhalation- air passes through the larynx, trachea and in to the posterior air sacs

Exhalation- air moves from the posterior air sacs to the lungs via the ventrobronchi and dorsalbronchi

Inhalation- air moves from lungs to cranial air sacs

Exhalation- air moves from the cranial air sacs through the syrinx and the trachea and out of the nares

16
Q

What did birds need two of to move air through entire respiratory system

A

Respiratory cycles whereas mammals need one

17
Q

What plays an important role in ventilation for mammals

A

Ribs

Intercostal muscles

Diaphragm

18
Q

Mammals
What is the larynx

A

Top of trachea

Origin of vocalisation

19
Q

Mammals
What is the pharynx

A

Area at back of throat

20
Q

Mammals
What is alveoli

A

Tiny pockets in lungs

Rich blood supply

Gas exchange occurs

21
Q

Mammals
What is the lungs

A

Main respiratory organ in vertebrates

22
Q

Mammals
What is the bronchioles

A

Smaller airways connecting the bronchi to the alveoli

23
Q

Mammals
What is the bronchi

A

Main airways leading to lungs

One for each lung

24
Q

Mammals
What is trachea

A

Tube connecting the pharynx and larynx to the lungs

Maintained by rings of cartilage

25
EXAM QUESTION State three differences between mammals and birds
Mammals have diaphragms and birds do not have diaphragms Mammals have alveoli and birds do not have alveoli Birds have nine airs sacs and mammals do not
26
EXAM QUESTION Explain what happens when mammals ventilate
Nostril Nasal passages Larynx Trachea Bronchi Bronchioles Alveoli- gas exchange. Oxygen in blood and carbon dioxide out
