Reflexes Flashcards
What is reflex
Fixed response to stimulus
What is stimulus
Detectable change in physical or chemical environment in organism
What are the reflexes
Toungue
Eye
Skin
Ear
Nose
What can reflexes be
Voluntary- use brain
Involuntary- not use brain
What is reflex arc
Natural pathway that controls reflex
What does reflex arc allow
Faster reflex actions to occur by activating spinal motor neurons without the delay of routing signals through brain
What does the reflex arc control
Involuntary reflexes and don’t require the brain
What do they have
Quicker response rate that enables us to protect ourselves from harmful stimuli
Give an example of reflex arc
Stimulus is hot object
- Receptors within the skin detect stimulus- pain
- Impulses are sent along the sensory neuron to spinal cord
- Central nervous system integrates information within spinal cord via interneurons, if response was voluntary then sent to brain
- Impulses are sent from the CNS along motor neurons to effector
- Effector generates response
What is dendrite
Receives communication from other neural cells trough their tree like projections
What is cell body or soma
Encloses nucleus
What is the nucleus
Contains genetic information that controls neuron
Myelin stealth is
Outer coating of axon
Protects and maintains health of axon
Acts like electrical insulator
What is nose of raviner
Saltatory conduction- impulses jump
Impulses jump through gaps in axon to speed up responses
What is Schwann cell
Help form myelin stealth
Speed up transmission of nerve impulses
