Neurological Disorders Flashcards
What is neurological disorders
Anything that affects the nervous system
What are the three neurological disorders
Listeriosis
Seizures
Myelopathy
What is listeriosis caused by
Bacterium named listeria monocytogenes
What is listeriosis spread by
Inhalation, direct contact
What is this caused by in terms of how do they get the bacterium
Poor quality silage
Give four symptoms of listeriosis
Fever
Abortion- no milk means no production and no money
Collapse
Lack of coordination
What is a consequence of listeriosis
Death
What is the treatment for listeriosis
Antibiotics
What is the first stage of degenerative myelopathy
Initial- loss of coordination in hind limbs, rear feet dragging, mild end weakness
What is the second stage of myelopathy
6 months- hind limbs become weaker, dogs have difficulty standing, dogs may loose ability to walk
What is the third stage of degenerative myelopathy
1 year- urine and fecal incontinence, weakness in front and hind, eventful paralysis in hind limbs
What is degenerative myelopathy
Hind paralysis in older dogs, progressive degenerative spinal disease, myelin stealth is infected
Give four symptoms of degenerative myelopathy
Wobbling
Loss of coordination
Lack of communication through neurons
Fall over when cornering
What are four consequences of degenerative myelopathy
Paralysis
Further weakness
Tired muscles
Unable to hold their urine and faeces
What is the treatment for degenerative myelopathy
No specific
Husbandry and health management plans to alleviate and support clinical signs
Mobility slings, Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy
What is the cause of seizures
No obvious cause
Brain tumours
Head traumas
What is seizures
Brain disorder
Affects 4 in 100 dogs
Unpredictable
Electrical signals cause an overload in brain
Sudden fits
Give four causes of this disorder
Epilepsy
Toxin exposure
Infection
Organ failure
What are the first stage in seizures
Aura- changes in behaviour, for example anxious, shake, salivate, minutes before going to happen
What is the second stage of seizures
Postictal- behaviour changes such as prolonged sleepiness, confusion, disorientation, eating voraciously
What are the symptoms of seizures
Generalised or mal- fall over, foaming at mouth, stiff
Focal- limited to specific body parts, may not look like more than just a twitch
Psychomotor- odd behaviours- chasing tail or appearing to see things that are not there, only lasts a minute or two
Cluster- multiple seizures over 24 hours
What are the consequences of seizures
Could fall or become injured
What is the treatment for seizures
If dog already has seizure disorders then they can have medication
