Mongastric And Hindgit Fermenters Flashcards
What is mechanical digestion and where does it occur
Large pieces of food is physically broken down
Teeth
What is absorption and where does it occur
Reabsorption
Intestines
What is chemical digestion and where does it occur
Enzymes breaks down food
Saliva, stomach, then small intestines
What is defection and where does it occur
Excreting waste
End of body
What is villi
Large intestine- water and water soluble vitamins are absorbed through finger like projections
What is the purpose of villi
Provides large surface area
Network of capillaries for efficient absorption
Hindgut fermenters:
What do they eat
High fibre plant material- hard to digest and digestive system needs to be adapted
Where do hindgut fermenters digest their food
Caecum at start of large intestine
Hindgut fermenters:
Microbes….
Digest/ ferment food
Give an example of Hindgut ferementers
Rabbit
Horses
What is the process of mono gastric digestion
Food is mechanically broken down by the teeth
saliva is added which contains amylase which starts chemical digestion
the food is swallowed and travels down the oesphagus via peristalsis.
Enzymes and hydrochloric acid is added in the stomach
food enters the duodenum and mixes with bile which emulsifies fats and enzymes from the pancreas.
Nutrients are absorbed in the jejunum and ileum, then water is absorbed via villi in the large intestine.
waste is stored in the rectum and leaves the body by the anus.
