The Human Body: An Orientation Flashcards
Gross anatomy
things that you can see with the naked eye, large structures, easily observable
Microscopic anatomy
Structures that can’t be seen with the naked eye, only can be viewed with a microscope
Physiology
The study of how the body and its parts function
Relationship between anatomy and physiology
- Structure determines what functions can occur
- if structure changes, the function must also change
What are the eight ways of maintaining life ( necessary life functions )
Maintaining boundaries, movement, responsiveness, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, growth
What are the five survival needs
Nutrients, oxygen, stable body temperature, atmospheric pressure
What are the three parts of maintaining homeostasis?
Receptor, control center, effector
What does the receptor do?
Responds to changes in the environment ( stimuli )
Send info to control center along a different pathway
What does the control center do?
It is the brain and it determines set points, analyzes info, determine the appropriate response
What does the effector do?
Provides a mean response to stimuli Info flows from control center to effector along A different pathway
Anatomy
The study of structure and the shape of the human body and parts
Anterior (ventral)
Toward the front
Posterior (dorsal)
Towards the back
Superior (cranial)
Toward the head
Inferior(caudal)
Toward the tail
