The Effect of Catalysts on the Rate of Reaction Flashcards
What is the activation energy?
= the minimum amount of energy required for a sucessful chemical reaction to take place/sucessful collisions
= enthalpy difference between the reactants and transition states
What is the transition state?
= point where existing chemical bonds are in the process of breaking and new chemical bonds are in the process of forming
= unstable
Where is the transition state found?
= on the highest point of the curve in energy diagrams
What do catalysts do?
= directs an alternative route with a pathway that has a lower activation energy
= allows more particles to overcome the activation barrier and sucessfully collide
= not used up
= permanently changed
What are the advantages and disadvantages of catalysts?
advantages:
= never used up
= saves money
= reduces co2 emmision]
disadvantages:
= toxic
=
