Displacement reactions of halogens Flashcards
What happens in an displacement reaction with halogens?
= aq halogen solution
= react with aq metal halide solution
= a more reactive halogen with displace a less reactive halogen as it is a more powerful oxidising agent
= balanced equation
What is produced in a displacement reaction?
= a halogen- coloured elements
= colour change
In aqueous solution what does chlorine look like?
= pale green
In aqueous solution what does bromine look like?
= irange but when we add non-polar organic solvent (cyclohexane)
it is orange
= yelllow
In aqueous solution what does flourine look like?
= brown but when we add a nin-polar organic solvent (cyclohexane) it is purple
= forms an upper layer+ does not take part in the reaction- halogens dissolve in allowing to see colours
= brown solution
What happens when chlorine reacts with sodium bromide solution?
= start: pale green
reaction forms bromine so it is orange
What happens when sodium iodide solution reacts with chlorine solution?
= start: pale green
reaction forms iodine, brown, when we add cycolhexane it is purple
