Catayltic converts: Flashcards
What do catalytic converts remove?
= carbon monoxide- toxic
= oxides of nitrogen
= converts into more stable products
What is the problem with CO?
= posionous
= no smell or colour
What is the problem with unburnt hydrocarbons?
= irritates longs
= can form smog
What is the problem of oxides of nitrogens>
= combind with water to form nitric acid
= can form acid rain
What is the structure of a converter?
= honey-comb
= coated with metals (platinum)- catalyst begins a reaction to change the chemical composition of the gases
What is the redox reaction?
CO is oxidised ti carbon dioxide
unburnt hydrocarbons are converted into co2 and water vapoir
oxides of nitrogen are reduced to nitrogen
When do converts work?
= when they are hot
What are catalysts posioned by?
= lead
= only be used by lead free fuels
=
