Testing for carbonate and sulfate ions Flashcards
1
Q
How do we test for carbonate ions?
A
= adding dilute nitric acid
= effersecence should be seen
= test the gas with lime-water if it turns cloudy it is co2, carbonate is present continye until no gas is produced
2
Q
How do we test for sulfate ions?
A
= add barium nitrate solution
= white precipitate of barium sulfate forms, showing sulfate is present
= add excess to make sure all sulfate ions are precipitate
= and filter
