"Chlorofluorocarbons and the Ozone Layer Flashcards
What is the problem with UV radiation?
= damage DNA- skin cancer
What is the ozone layer?
= contains high concentration of ozone
= O3- absorbs uv from
How does the ozone layer do this?
= Uv radiation causes the double bonds in oxygen to break
= 2 oxygen free radicals
= reacts with oxygen molecule (o2) forms ozone
= can absorb UV light turning back into a oxygen radical and a oxygen molecule
= same rate broken down and formed remains constant
What are chloroflurocarbons CFC?
= CFCl3
= haloalkanes- stable
= high bond enthalpy+ non toxic
= UV causes carbon to chlorine bond to break
= photodissociation
=
What happens in propgation step 1?
= a chlorine free radical reacts with ozone
= forms chlorine monoxide free radical and oxygen
What happens in propgation step 2?
= chlorine monoxide free radical reacts with oxygen radical
= chlorine radial + oxgen molecule
What are hydroflourocarbons used for?
= used for refrigerators
= air conditionings
= safer as they do not contain the c-cl bond, so no chlorine free rasicals
What is the problem with cfc’s?
= the carbon to chlorine bond- the chlorine regernated free radical produced aswell
= destruction of thousands of ozone molecules
