Structure and Properties of Haloalkanes Flashcards
What are haloalkanes?
= halogen atom bonded to an alkane
= CnH2n+1X
What is a primary haloalkane?
= halogen is bonded to a carbon atom that is bonded to one other carbon atom
What is a secondary haloalkane?
= halogen is bonded to the carbon atom which is bonded to 2 other carbon atoms
What is a teritary haloalkane ?
= halogen is bonded to the carbon atom that is bonded to 3 other carbon atoms
What type of bond is a carbon to halogen bond (C-X)?
= polar
= carbon is partial positive
= halogen is partial negative
What is the first property of haloalkanes?
= haloalkanes have a higher boiling point than the respective alkane
= intermolecular forces
alkanes: vanderwall forces, weak
haloalkanes: dipole dipole forces + vanderwall forces
As we move down the group what happens to the boiling points?
= boiling points- vandwerwall forces, electrons increases
What is the solubility of haloalkanes?
= insoluabnle
= cannot form hydrogen bonds
= not electronegatibe
=soluable on non-polar solvebts
