The Developmental Area Flashcards
What are the strengths of the developmental area?
Useful application especially to childcare/education, uses a variety of quant/Qual data,
Can study pp’s over time so reduces participant variables
What are the weaknesses of the developmental area?
Ethical issues with children such as consent, practical issues with children if they can’t say what they are thinking, samples often small & unrepresentative
What studies are in the developmental area?
- Bandura
- Kohlberg
- Chaney
- Lee
What are the defining principles of the developmental area?
Behaviour develops over time throughout a person’s life
Upbringing and childhood experiences affect adult behaviour
What are the defining concepts of the developmental area?
External influences on children’s behaviour
Moral development
Stages of development
Social learning theory
Operant conditioning
How does Bandura relate to the developmental area?
Bandura investigated how children might learn behaviours.
The study shows that a child’s external environment can have a large influence on their later behaviour.
Children will learn behaviours simply by observing (adult) role models and imitating the behaviours they see.
This can be both negative and positive behaviours
How does Kohlberg relate to the developmental area?
Kohlberg’s study suggested that children’s moral reasoning changes as they get older and develop in fixed stages
Kohlberg suggested these stages follow an invariant development sequence which is not affected by cultural or cultural differences
How does Chaney relate to the developmental area?
Shows children can learn behaviour through positive and negative reinforcement (e.g. rewards provided by the funhaler)
They use the funhaler more, and had more positive attitudes towards it compared to their standard inhalers
How does Lee relate to the developmental area?
Suggests that cultural differences DO impact moral moral reasoning and judgements about lying and truth telling.
As Chinese and Canadian children showed differences in how they judged lying and truth telling pro-social situations (Chinese children believed it was acceptable to lie about doing a good deed as it showed modesty
