The chemical level of organisation Flashcards
Matter-
anything that takes up space eg materials
Elements-
unique substances that make up matter
Cation
Positively charged ion
Anion
Negatively charged ion
Metabolism
sum of all the chemical reactions in the body
Types of reactions
-anabolic- synthesis reaction
-catabolic- decomposition/ breakdown
-exchange reaction: AB + CD-> AC + BD
-reversible reactions
Mixture
combination of elements not bound by chemical bonds
What percentage of our bodies is water?
65-80% depending on age - babies are very “wet”
Suspension
suspended material may mix with the fluid but will eventually separate eg blood
Colloid
differs from solution as molecules don’t dissolve instead are evenly distributed in the suspending material eg proteins in the blood plasma
Example of a solution in the body
blood plasma as it has dissolved compounds
