On the internal frieze in the temple of Apollo at Bassae now at the British museum
What is significant about the Amazonomachy freize ?
A unique example of a sculpted freize inside the Naos of a temple
When was the temple built ?
440BC by Itkinos (same guy as at the Parthenon)
It was dedicated to Apollo Epikourios ‘the helper’
What was the amazonomachy twinned with ?
The centauromachy as they where both depicted on the froze that ran around the inside of the temple’s Naos
What did the twinning of the centauromachy and amazonomachy do ?
It allowed for a unique experience as the viewer could take in the whole freize whilst standing in one place therefore allowing the narrative to be easier to follow
How did the choice of scene suit the space ?
Provided a bush and interesting scene for viewers
Why was the freize important to the town ?
Celebrated greek victory and was a suitable topic for a small town that wanted to celebrate its Greekness

The eats and south east end of the frieze depicting the Heraclean Amazonomachy ( battle with Hipoylta)
