Where and when did the all night celebration take place?
It took place on the Acropolis on the evening before the procession
What was the torch race ?
A two mile run from the Dipylon gate to the Altar on the Acropolis
What would each competitor of the torch race do ?
Run with a lit torch with the winner torch being used to light the sacrificial flame used I. The sacrifice to Athena the next day
Was the torch race important?
It was incredibly important with the winner holding incredible honor and would of generated glory for the tribe they belonged to
What happened post torch race?
Singing and dancing in honour of Athena which involved Maidens and young men
What was the most important day in relation to Athena?
The sixth day as all Athens presented her with the peplos
What was the peplos ?
A green dress that was woven using saffron and purple cloth
What was depicted on the peplos ?
Scenes from the great battle between the gods and the giants
What was the smaller peploi used for ?
The wooden statue of Athena in the Erechtion
What was the larger of the two used for ?
Presented to Athena Parthenos
Where did the procession begin ?
Began at the Dipylon gate and travelled theo fun the city on the Panathenaia way and needed at the foot of the Acropolis
What was the larger the two peploi used for In procession ?
Ceremonial boat that was pushed to the Acropolis before it was removed and taken up into the Acropolis
Where did the procession end ?
The alate to Athena Polias between the Parthenon and the Erechtion
