(1) The Preperation Flashcards
What was the first part ? Why
To clean the animals in order not to pollute the sacrifice
What would participants wear ?
Their best clothes and garland of leaves and twigs
What would happen to the animal post cleaning ? What is this
Gilding the horns if it had any
- the covering of a surface in a thin layer of gold
Would would the attendants do after gilding ? Who would be attending this ?
- Lead the animal to the altar
- A maiden who carried a basket of barley and grain which also hid a sacrificial knife used for the kill
Could the number of attendants vary ?
Yes , as seen from the panathenaic procession the whole city took part but in a smaller sacrifice the minimum would be a musicians and water bearers
Why where the musicians important ?
Their music reduced the chance of the animal getting freightened by the crowed
- if this happened the whole process had to start again and could be a negative sign to the gods
What would happen when the procession arrived at the sanctuary ?
Participants cleanse themselves and gather round the Altar and a fire was lit
What is important about the Altar here ?
The alter is being used to worship the god rather than the temple so the Altar is more important
Once the participants had gathered around the alter and lit a fire what would happen ?
Participants take handfuls of grain and the sacrifices would pour water on the head of the animal causing it to nod
Why was the pouring of water on top of the animals head important ?
Symbolic of the animal agreeing to the sacrifice
Once water was poured on the head of the animal what would participants do ?
Chief sacrificed utters a prayer and the other participants through their grain into the fire showing they confirm their participation
