Where did Theseus arrive at ?
A city called Eleusis which happened to be ruled by King Cercyon
What would Cercyon do ?
As a show of strength he challenged passers by to a wrestling match and the winner would become king of Elusis
What is important about this Myth ?
Theseus is actually the first to discover the art of wrestling and then tought it as men before him used size and strength however he used skill and technique
- this is debated as other sources suggest it is here where Theseus used Pankration to defeat Cercyon
What happened ?
Theseus defeated Cercyon in wrestling
What happened subsequently ?
Theseus became king of Elusis but continued on his journey
How is this depicted on the Kylix ?
Theseus pulls Cercyon towards him and the body position suggests Theseus is about to trip/ through Cercyon over his right leg
