What happened after the animal was killed ?
The feast began as the Greeks ensured the animals wouldn’t go to waste
Who received the first portion and why ?
The god
- they where the most important recipient of the sacrificial meat
How was the gods portion prepared ? What happens after this
- removing the animals thigh bones and wrapping them in fat
- then placed over the Altar while wine was poured on the fire
Why did the gods receive their specific portion ?
- it’s explained in the Myth of Prometheus (that’s all you need to know like you don’t actually have to know what is said you just need to know that)
Once the god is satisfied what happens ?
- entrails of the animal were read for omens
Once the gods portion was done and the entrails read, what would happen ?
The rest was cooked and shared amongst the immediate participants
- any spare meat was cooked and shared with the community
What was special about the sacrifices with the food specifically ?
- meat was not a regular part of the Greek diet so sacrifices offered a rare opportunity for its consumption
What does the sharing of the food show ?
- stressed the communal spirit and bend it’s of sacrifice to those who participated
What happened post feasting ?
The animals skin was given to the sanctuary
