What was a sanctuary ?
A holy area in a city or town that contained a temple and an altar to a god
Where was a sanctuary usually located in Greece ?
Separated from the rest of the city with a wall
What is the important feature of a sanctuary ?
It could have temples and Altars to many gods
What did a sanctuary have at its entrance and why?
A fresh water source for the people to wash their hands and feet therefore cleansing themselves of nah pollution before entering ( important as it could discourage the favor of the gods if not done )
What are some reasons why a person could be polluted ?
Contact with a dead person
Contact with a new born
Committed homicide
What was a temple ?
A building dedicated to a good and usually housing a cult statue of that god
What is another reason for a temple ?
It gave a god residence on earth
Who where the only people allowed in a temple itself ?
A priest therefore the majority of people never even stepped into one
Why was the Altar important ?
It was where the sacrifice and offering to the god took place
What was special about a sacrifice ?
The most communal part of the gods worship and could potentially involve a whole city
