Yes very important and the dead where to be treated with respect

Yes, no mater their social status or wealth
Once the person died what happened ?
- Eyes and mouth were closed
- Body was washed, perfumed and wrapped in a long white shroud
What happened after the body was covered ?
Why ?
A coin was placed on the deceased’s mouth
It as payment to Charon the boatman who ferried the dead
What happened after the body was prepared ?
The prosthesis or laying out took place
What was prosthesis ?
During the preparation of the body in the greek world the deceased would be laid out for two days to receive mourners
How long did the prosthesis last ?
2 days and gave friends and family a chance to come and pay their respects
What was placed outside during prosthesis and why ?
Death caused emends religious pollution so a bowl of water was laid out so people could wash themselves as they left
Once the respects had been paid what happened?
The women of the family would start their lament
What happens in lamentation ?
Women cut their hair, dress in shabby black clothing and wail beside the deceased beating their chest and flailing the arms
