Testicular conditions Flashcards
Cryptorchidism
Undescended testis (one or both)
Impaired spermatogenesis (since sperm develop at <37C)
Can have normal testosterone level (leydig unaffected by temp)
Increased risk of germ cell tumors
Prematurity increases the risk of cryptorchidism
Cryptochidism: markers
Low inhibin
High FSH, high LH
Low testosterone in bilateral vs.
normal testosterone in unilateral
Varicocele
Dilated veins in pampiniform plexuses due to
increased venous pressure
Most common cause of scrotal enlargement in adult males;
Left side due to increased resistance.
Can cause infertility because of increased temp;
Bag of worms; dx by ultrasound
Varicocele: treatment
Varicocelectomy
Embolization by interventional radiologist
