Estrogen Flashcards
Estrogens
17 beta estradiol, estriol, estrone
Sources
Ovary: 17beta estradiol
Placent: estriol
Adipose: estrone via aromatization
Potency
Estradiol> estrone > estriol
Pregnancy
50x increase in estradiol and estrone
1000x increase in estriol (indicator of fetal well-being)
Estrogen function
1) development of genitalia and breast, female fat distribution
2) growth of follicle, endometrial proliferation (increase myometrial excitability)
3) upregulation of estrogen, LH, and progesterone receptor; feedback inhibition of FSH and LH, then LH surge
4) stimulation of prolactin secretion but blocks its action at breast
5) Increase transport proteins: high SHBG, high HDL, low LDL
FSH affects what cells
Granulosa,
Increases aromatase,
which then converts androstenedione to estrogen
LH affects what cell
Theca cells,
Increases desmolase,
which then converts cholesterol to androstenedione
