Androgens Flashcards
Androgens
Testosterone
DHT
androstenedione
Source
Testes: DHT and testosterone
Adrenal: AnDrostenedione
Potency
DHT > testosterone > androstenedione
Testosterone function:
1) diff of epididymus, vas deferens, seminal vesicles (internal genitalia, except prostate)
2) growth spurt: penis, seminal vesicles, sperm, muscle, RBC
3) deepening of voice
4) closing of epiphyseal plate (via estrogen converted from testosterone)
5) libido
DHT function:
Early: diff of penis, scrotum, prostate
Late: prostate growth, balding, sebaceous gland activity.
Testosterone -> DHT
5alpha reductase, which is inhibited by finasteride
Testosterone and androstenedione
Both are converted to estrogen by aromatase in adipose tissue and leydig cells.
Aromatase is the key enzyme in the conversion of androgens to estrongen.
Exogenous testosterone
Inhibits hypothalamic-pit-gonadal axis;
low intratesticular testosterone, so
low testicular size, so
azoospermia
