A
  • spironolactone
  • Diuretic - potassium sparing
  • 25-200mg/day: edema (CHF, cirrhosis)
  • 50-100mg/day; HTN
  • competes with aldosterone for receptor sites in kidney -> increase Na, Cl, and water excretion while conserving K+ and H+
  • give early in the morning

Potassium and Medications

A
  • Diuretics - potassium sparing diuretics
  • ACEI and ARBs are also used for CHF which can increase K
  • K supplements
  • salt substitute has K
  • Digoxin used in CHF (makes pt feel better) or used in afib; if K is high, it makes digoxin toxic
