Teaching styles Flashcards
Command: Definition
> Teacher leads from the front and gives orders/instructions for learners to follow
For novices (cognitive learners)
e.g. Fitness classes, Field Athletics
Command: Positives
+
> Useful when there is safety risk
> Large groups
Command: Negatives
-
> Boring, learners lack motivation
> Harder to give individual feedback and corrections
Reciprocal: Definition
> Student teacher is given instructions then students wok in pairs - one teaches and one performs
Teacher supervises and corrects errors
For intermediate/experts (associative/autonomous learners)
For basic/closed drills
Reciprocal: Positives
+
> Students have more control so are more motivated
> Still coach-led so benefits less experienced athletes who show potential
> Feedback can be given
Reciprocal: Negatives
- > May introduce safety risk if teacher has less control
Students require some level of experience
Guided Discovery: Definition
> Teacher has one goal set in mind - students are set a task and are left to find the solution
Teacher just supervises
Students use trial and error
For intermediate/experts (autonomous learners)
Dance choreography, open situations
Guided Discovery: Positives

> Allows for freedom and creativity (motivates students)
> Inspires new tactics
> Develops teamwork and decision-making
Guided Discovery: Negatives
-
> Doesn’t suit beginners or large groups (focus on environment not execution)
> Requires skill to be well learnt
> Can’t be used in high risk scenarios
Problem Solving: Definition
> Teacher sets a task with no one set goal - students are left to find solutions
Students have full control, teacher supervises
For experts (autonomous learners)
Dance choreography, open situations
Problem Solving: Positives
+
> Increases motivation/creativity
> Improves decision making skills for game performance
Problem Solving: Negatives
-
> Can’t be used in high risk scenarios
> Requires high level athletes
>Can’t be used in large groups
