Skill:
Learned ability to bring about predetermined results
Gross Skills:
Involve large muscle movements which are not very precise and include many fundamental movements (walking, running, jumping)
e.g. shot putt
Fine Skills:
Involve intimate precise movements using small muscle groups and generally involve high levels of hand-eye coordination
e.g. rifle shooting
Open Skills:
The environment is constantly changing and skills are constantly being adapted according to the unpredictable environment
e.g. rugby tackle
Closed Skills:
Take place in a stable, predictable environment, and the performer knows exactly what to do and when (habitual)
e.g. archery
Internally Paced Skills:
The performer controls the rate at which the skill is executed
e.g. diving
Externally Paced Skills:
The environment (which may include opponents or a stimulus) affects the rate at which the skill is executed
e.g. batting in cricket
Discreet Skills:
Brief, well-defined actions which have a clear beginning and end
e.g. shot putt
Serial Skills:
A group of discreet skills strung together to make a new, complex movement
e.g. triple jump
Continuous Skills:
Skills that have no obvious beginning or end, it is repeated like a cycle
e.g. running, swimming, cycling
