What is motivation?
The internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct behaviour.
What is intrinsic motivation?
When a person pursues an activity for the pride and satisfaction they achieve, regardless of what anyone else may think.

What is extrinsic motivation?
Stems from other people, positive or negative reinforcement, and tangible rewards.
> Being a role model
> Prize money
> LIV
What is the law of effect?
Rewarding a particular behaviour increase the probability that it will be repeated.
Grassroots:
> Karate belts
> Gymnastics levels
What is the drive reduction theory?
The need to learn inspires motivation or drive to succeed.
> Performer achieves desired outcome
> Leads to a reduction is drive
What is an example of drive reduction?
People giving up on sport when it becomes routine.
> Transferring teams
> Changing doubles partner
What can a coach do to avoid drive reduction?
> Set new goals
Increase difficulty/progress
Vary types of practice
What are the motivation theories?
Achievement motivation
What is achievement motivation?
What happens when we are faced with a choice to seek out or avoid situations where we may or may not be successful.
> AN individual’s drive to succeed for their own sake
What personality factors influence achievement motivation?
> Nach: Need to achieve
Naf: Need to avoid failure
What is a Nach personality?
> Want to be challenged
Takes difficult option to see if they are capable
Likes feedback
High task persistence
What is a Naf personality?
> Take the easy option
Afraid of failure
Avoids challenges and risks
Does not like feedback
Often gives up
How do the personality types respond when faced with easy or challenging task?
Nach: challenging task - if succeed, achieved highly, if fail, doesn’t matter as they tried
Naf: easy task - ensures success
